The Texture Studies vol. 1 || Resonant Dust & Tones
Resonant Dust & Tones is a sonic exploration built from four original recordings I captured of a wood sander running with a dust-extraction vacuum. I was sanding down a wooden door one weekend when its hollow body turned into a soundboard, amplifying the sander’s resonant vibrations. The hum of the motor blended with the vacuum, creating a surprisingly harmonic drone.
The recordings contain a wealth of sonic character: solid fundamentals with rich harmonic overtones, sparkling high-frequency detail from the motor and sanding, and rough, electrically charged mids.
After processing the recordings, I ran them through tape machines and a range of effects, shaping them into complex, dense, tonal, and harmonically rich textures.
From the recordings, I created a sample pack that I called the Texture Files as well as a virtual instrument, the Dust Engine.
The sample pack contains:
- 4 raw sounds: original recordings
- 9 processed sounds: run through tape machines
- 42 drones: textural samples + BONUS 4 soundscapes: short, ambient pieces
The virtual instrument is a soft-sampler synth that turns the drones from the pack into a flexible virtual instrument for exploration and creativity. I built the instrument with Decent Sampler to make sure it's easily accessible to everyone. Decent Sampler is completely free and runs as either a standalone application or a plug-in in most DAWs.
You're free to use The Texture Studies in your music, and if you share your creations online, please tag me @quentinlachapele (Instagram). I'd love to hear what you come up with.
Enjoy :)
